Adware vs Ransomware

The breakout of various computer malware has made security an arduous task. As more types of malware emerge, it becomes difficult to identify what’s wrong with the computer, so drastic measures could be taken. This article is looking at Adware vs Ransomware, what they mean, their differences and how it could be prevented.

What is Adware?

Adware is a type of software that shows disruptive advertisements to a user while using the computer. An Adware may hijack a browser and show ads during browsing sessions or show large unclosable ads on the computer. It is regarded as the least serious malware and sometimes, not regarded malware at all. You can check our full detail explanation of Adware here.

What is Ransomware?

A Ransomware encrypts computer data with a key, known only to the hackers. Once the hacker locks the computer, the hackers send several messages requesting for payment in exchange for the unlock key. This is followed by threats of destroying the key and losing access to the data forever. Attackers usually request payment with an encrypted digital currency, to avoid trace. Here is an article where we went into the full detail explanation of Ransomware.

Adware vs Ransomware differences

Here are the main differences between Adware and Ransomware, and insight to which is more dangerous for the computer system.

Encryption:

A Ransomware usually encrypts files on the computer with a key, while an Adware doesn’t need to. This is because all an Adware does is to show intrusive ads.

Ransom:

A Ransomware usually requests the payment of a ransom to the attackers for the decryption key. Adware does not usually request payment as it gets us income primarily from paying advertisers. A Ransomware usually requests payment in encrypted digital currencies, such as Bitcoin to avoid tracking.

Usage:

While a computer may be completely inaccessible as a result of Ransomware, it is usually accessible even with an Adware. However, an Adware slows down the computer totally and it may become so unbearable that basic functions that are easily done previously become so difficult.

Target:

Computers were the most victims of Ransomware and Adware attacks. However, as the usage rates of mobile phones increase, mobile phones and other internet-connectible become major targets. Today, Ransomware locks virtually any device, including smart TVs and smartphones while Adware attacks mainly mobile phones and computers.

Complexity:

Ransomware is a much more complicated and uneasy to manage malware type than Adware. Most user does not always regard Adware as malware because the user agrees to see the ads in the fine print of a legal app in some instances. However, a Ransomware illegally gets into the system through a malicious download and wreaks havoc.

Antivirus- Recommended Solution to Adware and Ransomware

While it is typically difficult for the average user to detect Adware and Ransomware before it strikes, antivirus software is the best bet.

Good antivirus software scans the computer for malware and once detected, removes them immediately. This makes it easy for antivirus to prevent Adware and Ransomware.

Finding an antivirus that works is another issue to be wary of, as some antivirus end up becoming malware.
